Plastic has many forms and check the number to determine if it is recyclable. Metal and glass and can be recycled infinitely. Cardboard and paper can be recycled however make sure there is no food or other material on them.

Recycling v. Composting
While recycling may be a better option as this reduces the need to cut down more trees, at least when referring to paper, however composting doesn't use any fossil fuels and thus many be considered a better option overall.
